Frequently Asked Questions
How is Fly Colour Calm different to other colouring books?
Fly Colour Calm was created by a nervous flyer, for nervous flyers.
Whether it's for you or a gift for a loved one, this book is designed to be a calming companion — combining creativity with gentle support flight anxiety.
During a difficult time in my life, I noticed that stress often surfaced while flying. As a lifelong artist — and knowing how common flight anxiety can be — this project began to take shape. I spent over a year hand-drawing, inking, scanning, and digitally refining each illustration to make it unique and supportive. At the heart of every design are uplifting affirmations and calming facts about flying, which can be revisited throughout your journey to keep your focus grounded and positive.
Each colouring page is paired with a Flight Log to complete before, during, or after your flight — offering space to track emotions, reflect on your progress, and reconnect with the reasons you’re travelling. By filling these pages, you create a personal record to revisit should the pre-flight nerves return.
Fly Colour Calm was tested in-flight during development, with a spiral-bound format and size chosen to fit comfortably on a standard aeroplane tray table. Its wiro binding makes it easy to flip through, even in small spaces — perfect for travel. It’s also coated with a protective anti-scuff laminate to help guard against scratches during your journey.
I've loved drawing and colouring for as long as I can remember, and I truly hope that creating Fly Colour Calm helps others approach flying with a greater sense of peace and freedom.
Will this book cure my fear of flying?
This book isn’t intended as a cure for fear of flying, but rather as a supportive tool to have by your side — one part of a calming toolkit.
For me, Fly Colour Calm has been just one part of a more holistic approach to feeling gradually more at ease in the air. Alongside colouring, I listen to relaxing meditations before a flight, learn about aviation through books and podcasts, and find comfort in connecting with others who feel the same. I’ve explored courses and therapeutic approaches too — all of which have helped in different ways. Sometimes I even start a design the day before a flight to lighten that pesky anticipatory anxiety.
Think of this book as a gentle companion — a creative distraction to help shift your focus, soothe your mind, and remind you of the reasons you're flying.
What size is it?
The Fly Colour Calm book measures 285mm x 216mm x 15mm and weighs just over 400g. When I’ve travelled with it, it fits comfortably in my hand luggage backpack - and should also tuck nicely into larger handbags or tote bags.
While designing the book, I tested early sketches on a flight and adjusted the size to fit neatly on a standard tray table. I chose wiro binding to make it easy to flip between the colouring pages and flight log — so you can use whichever brings you calm in the moment.
How many illustrations are there?
Fly Colour Calm has 30 original illustrations and 30 Flight Log pages. Each colouring page typically takes a few hours to complete (I usually complete one in 3-4 hours). You might choose to complete one illustration across two short-haul flights, or during one long-haul journey, depending on your pace. This means the book could last anywhere from 30 to 60 flights - giving you plenty of mindful moments across your travels.
The accompanying Flight Logs are designed to work for both short- and long-haul flights. For guidance, please see the ‘Flight Log: How to Use’ page at the beginning of the book.
What should I use to colour the illustrations?
I chose the destinations in my designs for their vibrancy and colour. Who says the sea has to be blue, or trees have to have green leaves? Just experiment and enjoy yourself – there are no rules here!
I’ve coloured for years using felt tips and fine liners, but these days I prefer coloured pencils. I find it soothing to softly blend the colours together. To keep my pencils tidy and organised in my hand luggage, I store them in a zipped pencil case with an inspirational quote on it!
The book is printed on high-quality 170gsm paper, which is suitable for regular felt tips, gel pens, and crayons. However, I don’t recommend using permanent markers, Sharpies, or alcohol-based pens, as these will likely bleed through. Try to avoid heavy layering with pens, pressing hard or holding your pen in one place for too long as that can cause show-through on the reverse side.
Top tip: Try your pens on a small area first before continuing.
How can I share my illustrations once they are completed?
On my own journey with fear of flying, I’ve felt so grateful to be part of a supportive and understanding community. Sharing your experiences with Fly Colour Calm — and your moments of progress — can offer real comfort to others who are on a similar journey.
If you'd like to share, you can tag #flycolourcalm in any photos of the book in use - whether it's just the pages or a snap of you too, if you're happy to be included! I’ve personally found it so reassuring to see others facing their flying fears. It’s a gentle reminder: if they can do it, I can too.
You’re welcome to use your coloured designs for personal projects, but please note they aren’t for commercial resale. As well as social media, I’ve created a Gallery page on this website to celebrate your creativity and courage!
Do you ship internationally?
Absolutely! I know flight anxiety is something people experience all over the world, and I’m so happy to be able to ship internationally. As a small independent business based in the UK, I’m unable to cover international shipping costs — these are calculated at checkout, with different options available depending on your location and budget.
How long will it take for my order to arrive?
As well as being the creator of Fly Colour Calm, I also work four days a week in my primary job. I aim to dispatch orders at least 3-4 times a week outside of my working hours.
UK orders are sent via Royal Mail tracked delivery. Typically, this will arrive 2-3 working days after dispatch. International orders usually take 6–7 working days, and you’ll have the option to choose between standard or tracked shipping at checkout, depending on your budget. Double-check your delivery address before placing your order, as I’m unable to resend parcels due to incorrect details.
To avoid any delays or disappointment, please allow plenty of time for your order to arrive. This book is here to support you, especially when you're preparing to fly, so giving it time to arrive means it can be with you when you need it most.
Do you offer returns or exchanges?
Each Fly Colour Calm book is carefully inspected on arrival from the printers and personally wrapped to ensure it arrives in perfect condition.
If you're unhappy with the quality of your item, please email a photo and your order number to hello@flycolourcalm.co.uk so I can help.
Changed your mind? Returns are accepted within 30 days of purchase. Refunds or exchanges can only be offered if the product is faulty or returned unused and in it’s original state.
As a small business, return postage costs are the customer’s responsibility, as well as any loss in value if the item is not returned in a resalable condition.
Please allow up to 10 days for returns to arrive, and several working days for your refund to be processed after I receive the item.
